Salsali Private Museum Shows the 2013 “Artist of the Year”

For Imran Qureshi, 2013 was the year of his international breakthrough. He was included in Massimiliano Gioni’s Biennale show Palazzo Enciclopedico; he created a site-specific installation for the Roof Garden of the New York Metropolitan Museum. And in Berlin, the Deutsche Bank KunstHalle opened with his “Artist of the Year” exhibition. This first major solo show of the Pakistani artist in Europe was subsequently on view at the MACRO in Rome. Starting on January 24, Qureshi’s show can now be seen at the Salsali Private Museum (SPM) in Dubai. With this exhibition, presented in cooperation with the only private museum in the United Arab Emirates, Deutsche Bank celebrates the fifth anniversary of its Middle East Foundation. The organization supports cultural, educational, and environmental projects in the region. For its commitment to art, Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid al Maktoum has given Deutsche Bank its "Supporter of the Art" award for the fourth time.

Providing access to the creative potential of contemporary art—this is the goal Deutsche Bank shares with Ramin Salsali, founder of the SPM. Salsali not only shows his collection in the museum, which opened in 2011—a collection consisting of over 700 paintings, photo and video works, sculptures, and installations by a wide variety of artists including Georg Baselitz, Yto Barrada, Mona Hatoum, and Shirin Neshat—the German-Iranian businessman also regards the museum as a place where young and established art collectors can establish contacts. In addition, the SPM presents traveling exhibitions and offers other collectors a forum for presenting their art to a wider public.
